Brand-new for 2024 Triumph has released its two new 400cc motorcycles, the Scrambler 400 X and Speed 400. With both bikes shaking up the market we paid Angus from Triumph London a visit, to get his comparison of the two models after having the chance to take them out for a ride in the capital:
"The Scrambler 400 X and Speed 400 are two awesome new bikes in Triumph's range which both have liquid-cooled 400cc engines or if you really want to be precise 398.15cc. These engines are single cylinders and put out around 40 brake horsepower making perfect entry-level bikes, which you can even get on the A2 license. This could then lead on to moving up in the range to our 900 and 1200cc bikes.
Now a few little features about the bikes. We have the standard stem mirrors on the Scrambler 400 X whereas on the Speed 400 we have the bar in mirrors. The Scrambler 400 X also comes with hand guards along with the headlight bezel all as standard. Now one of the main differences between these two bikes apart from the seat height which you can easily see, the Scrambler being at 835mm and the Speed being at 790mm, is the front suspension setup. There's a longer travel than the Scramble 400 X, perfect for those off-road moments. It also has a 19-inch front wheel, whereas the Speed 400 has a 17-inch front wheel. Both bikes are kitted out with ByBre brake calipers at the front as single, and on the rear, both have the ByBre as well. Weight-wise, these bikes are sitting at around 170kg wet-weight, so nice and light on the road. Each bike comes in three colour schemes, with the Scrambler coming in Matt Khaki Green, Phantom Black, or Carnival Red, and the Speed 400 coming in Carnival Red two-tone, Caspian Blue, and Jet Black. Really cool styles for both of these bikes!
Join Cal and Amy from North London for a ride-out on the two new models.
The models have about 20 different accessories that you can choose from ranging from engine protectors, trackers, and alarms, along with stylised components. You can get a high-level mudguard for the Scrambler 400 X or bullet LED indicators for the Speed 400. Some of these are compatible with both bikes, but all allow the rider to accessorise and make the bike their own.
A little bit about the riding style of these two bikes. They are both awesome for the urban ride. When you take it off-road, the Scrambler 400 X comes into play over the Speed 400. With the longer suspension travel and the better clearance for those little green lanes, it's an awesome bike for those situations. Where the Speed 400 dominates over the Scrambler however is in urban riding, as with us being in the centre of London the bike is great for nipping in and out of traffic. Shorter wheelbase, smaller front tyre, easier to turn around on.
Over the past few months, since these bikes got announced by Triumph, they've really hit the ground running. With loads of orders being taken these bikes are proving to be fabulous, already competing with the mid-size to low-engine size models from other motorcycle brands."
